Trilateral meeting highlights regional security

On Monday, Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and French President Emmanuel Macron sent a message of unity and solidarity after a trilateral meeting at the Andreas Papandreou Air Base. The discussions focused on the latest developments in the wider region.

European unity and collective responsibility

President Christodoulides emphasised that “unity is Europe’s strength,” thanking the leaders of Greece and France for their prompt response and tangible support. He highlighted that “the security of Cyprus is the security of Europe and represents collective responsibility.”

Christodoulides noted that Greece, France, Spain, and Italy demonstrate practical European solidarity, contributing to stability and security in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Strategic European autonomy

President Macron stressed that an attack on Cyprus is an attack on Europe, underlining that defending Cyprus is vital not only for the country and its partner Greece but also for France and the EU. He emphasised the importance of European strategic autonomy, particularly while Cyprus holds the EU presidency.

Strong historical ties

Prime Minister Mitsotakis highlighted the enduring historical bonds between Greece and Cyprus, stating that the Republic of Cyprus “will never be alone.” He noted that strategic agreements are tested in practice, pointing to the coordinated response of Italy and Spain as proof that joint action is essential for handling future threats. Mitsotakis concluded that “now is the time to make clear that every inch of European territory is inviolable.”
