Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said the explosive drones that headed toward British military bases in Cyprus in recent days were launched from Lebanon.
“We must now look toward the Lebanese front,” Kombos told The Guardian, confirming the origin of the drones for the first time.
He added that authorities cannot rule out threats from the wider northeastern direction and stressed the need for strong defense systems.
Cypriot officials say the target was the British bases and not the Republic of Cyprus. The incident comes after the start of the U.S.-led attack on Iran.
At the same time, European naval and air defense forces have arrived in Cyprus, forming a strong security presence around the EU member state.
Greece has sent the frigates Kimon and Psara and four F-16 fighter jets. France and Italy have also deployed warships. Turkey is reportedly considering sending F-16 jets to the occupied areas.
The RAF base at Akrotiri is the United Kingdom’s main forward base for operations in the Middle East. Britain kept about 3 percent of Cyprus when the island gained independence in 1960.
