Nicos Anastasiades: Not the time to raise issue of British bases

Date:

Amid the ongoing crisis in the wider region, this is not the right time for the Republic of Cyprus to raise the issue of the British bases, former President Nicos Anastasiades said.

Speaking on state radio, he stressed that at this particular moment any confrontation would only cause harm.

However, he noted that it is important for Nicosia to examine how proper interstate relations with the United Kingdom can be shaped so that Britain assumes its responsibilities and protects both the Republic of Cyprus and the bases.

Referring more broadly to developments in the Middle East, Anastasiades said Cyprus cannot be considered part of the crisis.

At the same time, he underlined the need for the European Union to take a stronger stance and play a role in the ongoing developments.

Regarding the possibility of the Republic of Cyprus applying for membership in NATO, he said that given Turkey’s veto, joining the alliance is not feasible.

“As a result, discussing something like this does not serve any purpose,” Anastasiades said.
