ON THIS DAY: Cassius Clay becomes Muhammad Ali (1964)

Date:

In 1964, Cassius Clay, the reigning heavyweight boxing champion, made one of the most defining decisions of his life. He joined the Nation of Islam, a religious movement promoting Black empowerment, self-discipline, and the rejection of systemic oppression. Alongside this spiritual commitment, he changed his name to Muhammad Ali, declaring that “Cassius Clay” was a “slave name” that carried the legacy of oppression.

Ali’s announcement sent shockwaves through the sports world. Fans and media struggled to reconcile the brash, confident fighter they knew with his new identity rooted in faith, politics, and racial consciousness. Yet for Ali, the change was a natural extension of his belief in self-determination and pride in his African heritage.

This transformation marked the beginning of Ali’s journey as more than just a boxer. Outside the ring, he became a prominent voice on civil rights, religion, and social justice, challenging both the status quo and expectations of athletes in the public eye. His stance made him a symbol of courage, conviction, and the fight for equality, solidifying a legacy that transcended sports.

Decades later, Muhammad Ali remains an enduring figure not only for his athletic achievements but for his unwavering commitment to principle, identity, and justice.
