Middle East conflict escalates with drones, missiles, and air raids

Date:

The Middle East is experiencing a surge of violence and tension, with multiple reports of drone attacks, missile strikes, and air raids across several countries.

Sirens blared for hours in Jordan’s coastal city of Aqaba, while dense smoke was seen over Kuwait’s Al Jahra city after a fighter jet reportedly crashed. Unconfirmed reports suggest the aircraft was a US F-15.

Cyprus confirms limited drone attack at RAF Akrotiri

Cypriot authorities confirmed that the UK’s RAF base at Akrotiri was struck overnight by an unmanned Shahed-type drone, causing minor material damage. President Nikos Christodoulides emphasised that Cyprus is not involved in any military operations and prioritises the safety of citizens.

“The Republic of Cyprus does not participate in any military action and will remain focused on humanitarian responsibilities,” Christodoulides said, adding that he remains in constant contact with European leaders and allies about the developments.

Explosions and missile attacks across the region

Iraq’s Erbil witnessed strong explosions as air defences engaged missiles and drones targeting the Erbil International Airport. Videos from southwestern Syria’s Daraa show a drone being shot down, though the origin of both aircraft remains unclear.

In Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes on southern Beirut and other southern regions have killed at least 31 people and wounded 149. These strikes followed rocket attacks by Hezbollah on northern Israel. Lebanese authorities issued forced displacement orders for 53 towns and villages, prompting hundreds of thousands to flee, particularly from southern Lebanon to Beirut and northern regions.

Iran’s missile retaliation and Gulf state alerts

Iran has launched multiple waves of missile and drone attacks against US and allied positions in the Gulf. Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the UAE have all reported air raid sirens and attempted drone or missile interceptions. Kuwaiti air defences successfully neutralised the majority of hostile drones near Kuwait City.

Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s National Security Council, stated that Iran will not negotiate with the US and stressed that Iranian armed forces are defending the country, not initiating attacks. Analysts warn that Iran’s leadership is highly focused on maintaining control and avoiding the perception of surrender, signalling prolonged tensions.

Hezbollah’s involvement and Lebanon humanitarian crisis

Hezbollah has struck back against Israel in coordination with Iran, though its military wing remains weakened from prior conflicts, including Israel’s war on Gaza since October 2023. The group’s actions reflect both a strategic defence of Iranian interests and a bid to influence the regional power balance.

Civilian displacement in Lebanon is extensive. Thousands of residents from southern towns, including Tyre, are moving north towards Beirut. Ramadan fasting schedules have been disrupted, as families seek shelter amid airstrikes and explosions.

Global economic and security implications

The ongoing Middle East conflict has triggered economic repercussions. Brent crude oil surged by 13 percent in early Asian trading before stabilising at $76.48 per barrel. Stock markets in Asia and futures for US indexes like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite fell amid uncertainty.

The intensifying conflict has also raised concerns for international security, with multiple countries issuing advisories and urging citizens to take shelter. The US, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE have condemned the attacks and reaffirmed their right to self-defence.

Outlook for the region

Analysts warn that the conflict may escalate further, given Iran’s continued missile attacks, Hezbollah’s involvement, and ongoing Israeli operations in Lebanon. Civilian casualties and displacement are expected to rise, and the humanitarian situation across the region could deteriorate significantly.

International observers continue to monitor developments closely, emphasising the importance of diplomatic engagement and containment to prevent further escalation.
