The Paralympic Committee Cyprus sent official letters to European institutions after MEP Fidias Panayiotou made public statements insulting people with intellectual disabilities and the Paralympic Movement. The move forms part of the Committee’s planned institutional actions.
Letters target EU bodies
The letters reached the European Parliament, the ethics and code of conduct bodies for MEPs, and the European Ombudsman. The Committee asked them to examine the case focusing on institutional responsibility, public discourse, and protection of human dignity.
The Committee also informed European networks and organisations that defend the rights of people with disabilities and promote Paralympic values, urging their active participation and institutional intervention.
Protecting dignity and principles
The Committee stressed that its actions do not target individuals. Its goal is to ensure that public discourse at the European level follows the principles European institutions must uphold. The Committee highlighted that the Paralympic Movement cannot and will not become a tool for political or media manipulation. It insisted that the dignity of athletes with disabilities, their families, and their community remains non-negotiable.

The Paralympic Committee Cyprus will continue to act with consistency, seriousness, and adherence to European values, providing timely updates on all results of its interventions.
