Weekend weather: Rain, storms and snow ahead

Unstable weather is expected to affect the island this weekend, with rain, isolated thunderstorms and snowfall at higher elevations, according to the latest forecast. Conditions are set to improve gradually from Saturday afternoon, while temperatures will rise again on Sunday.

Partly cloudy with local rain today

An area of weak low pressure is affecting the region, while dust will remain suspended in the atmosphere.

Today’s weather will be partly cloudy, with a chance of isolated showers. After midday, local rain is expected, mainly over the western half of the island. Winds will blow from the northeast to southeast, light to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort, locally strong up to 5 Beaufort. Seas will be slightly rough.

Temperatures will rise to around 15°C inland and along the coasts, and about 7°C in the higher mountains.

Rain, storms and snow overnight

Tonight, conditions will gradually turn cloudy, with local rain and isolated thunderstorms. Snow or sleet is expected on the highest peaks of the Troodos. Winds will remain mainly northeast to southeast, light to moderate at 3–4 Beaufort. Seas will stay slightly rough.

Temperatures will drop to 8°C inland, around 11°C on the coast, and close to 3°C in the higher mountains, where frost will occur locally.

Improvement expected from Saturday afternoon

On Saturday, local rain and isolated thunderstorms are forecast, along with snowfall in the higher mountain areas. However, a noticeable improvement in weather conditions is expected gradually from the afternoon.

On Sunday, the weather will be mainly cloudy at intervals, while during the afternoon an isolated shower may occur in mountainous areas.

By Monday, conditions will be partly cloudy, becoming overcast at night with local rain expected.

Temperatures on the rise

Temperatures will remain at similar levels on Saturday, before rising on Sunday to near or slightly above the seasonal average. On Monday, temperatures are expected to stay at around the same levels as Sunday.

The snow depth at Chionistra stood at 17 centimetres at the time of the forecast bulletin’s release.
