UN buffer zone violations reported in Avlona

Claims of renewed activity in the neutral zone

New violations of the UN buffer zone have been recorded in the Avlona area, according to journalist Giorgos Tattis of the Newspaper of Western Nicosia.

Based on the information reported, two Turkish farmers – known for repeated incursions into the buffer zone – are cultivating land near UN Post 38, in an area where farming is not permitted.

UN forces withdraw as work continues

According to statements by Avlona community leader Menelaos Savva, who was present at the scene, UN forces arrived after he informed both the United Nations and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

However, he said that UNFICYP personnel left the area at around 1:00pm, while the Turkish farmers continued their activities uninterrupted.

Permanent crops raise concern

The farmers are reportedly entering the buffer zone incrementally, cultivating land piece by piece. What is considered particularly significant in this instance is that they are now planting permanent crops, such as citrus trees, rather than temporary crops like garlic, tomatoes or cereals, as had been the case in the past.

Complaint over removal of community leader

Savva further complained that UN forces paradoxically checked him as well, despite the fact that he holds valid access authorisation. He said that UN personnel subsequently asked him to be escorted out of the buffer zone.

The area concerned lies within the UN-controlled buffer zone near Avlona, in the Nicosia District, where UNFICYP is responsible for monitoring compliance with ceasefire arrangements.
