Fatalities rise to 49 in Israeli airstrikes on Palmyra

Date:

The death toll from Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday in three areas of the ancient city of Palmyra, located in the central Syrian desert, has risen to 49, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Earlier, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported that 36 people had been killed and over 50 injured.

According to the UK-based non-governmental organization, which relies on a broad network of sources in Syria, the victims include 24 Syrian civilians affiliated with Iran-backed paramilitary groups, 22 non-Syrians, mainly members of the Iraqi Shiite “Al-Nujaba Movement,” and three unidentified individuals.

Among the targets hit in Palmyra’s industrial zone was an ammunition warehouse, the Observatory reported.

Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned “in the strongest terms the brutal Israeli attack on the city of Palmyra,” labeling it part of the “ongoing crimes of Zionism against the region’s countries and their peoples.”
