ICC Prosecutor removed amid sexual harassment allegations

Date:

Member states of the International Criminal Court (ICC) have voted to remove Prosecutor Karim Khan following allegations of sexual assault, which he denies.

A total of 82 member states voted in favour of Khan’s removal.

Meanwhile, the United States—which is not a member of the ICC—has imposed sanctions on 11 ICC judges and prosecutors, including Khan, citing the arrest warrants issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the country’s former Defence Minister, as well as previous investigations into the actions of US troops in Afghanistan.

Following the decision, Israel’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Danny Danon, said that “the political witch hunt against Israel did not save Karim Khan.”

“By issuing a politically motivated arrest warrant against Prime Minister Netanyahu, Karim Khan believed the world would ignore the serious allegations of sexual misconduct against him. He was wrong,” Danon said.

He added that Khan “attempted to make Israel a scapegoat in an effort to divert attention from his own misconduct. Today, the international community rejected that cynical attempt.”

Danon further stated that those seeking to prosecute Israel “will not escape accountability” and would also lose the trust of the international community.

“The attacks against Israel, which were intended to distract from his disgraceful conduct, did not save Karim Khan, and they will not help Zohran Mamdani either,” he concluded.
