DISY leader calls for waiver of parliamentary immunity

The President of the Democratic Rally (DISY), Annita Demetriou, has taken a public position following allegations made against DISY MP Nikos Sykas, calling on him to voluntarily waive his parliamentary immunity.

The case concerns a complaint alleging assault against the MP’s partner, which remains under investigation by the authorities.

In a public post, Demetriou stressed that there is zero tolerance for allegations of violence, while underlining the importance of respecting justice and the presumption of innocence. However, she said the investigation must proceed immediately and without any shadow.

She described the voluntary waiver of immunity as necessary, adding that the MP has been removed from the party’s ballot- a move she said she is formally proposing to the relevant party bodies.

Demetriou also stated that violence, particularly against women, runs contrary to the values upheld by Democratic Rally, stressing that these principles are non-negotiable.

Sykas denies allegations

Earlier, Nikos Sykas issued his own public statement via social media, categorically denying any involvement in the alleged incident.

He expressed strong dissatisfaction over what he described as the leak of an ongoing investigation to the media and social platforms, stating that the case entered public discourse before any assessment of testimony had been completed.

Sykas said he was shocked by the climate created around the case, referring to “trial by media” and “people’s courts” forming online and in news coverage, before he had even been called to give his own statement.

Despite this, he emphasised that he fully respects the investigative process and declared his readiness to cooperate at any time with the competent authorities in order to clarify the facts.

The investigation remains ongoing.
