At least 13 people died, and almost 100 were injured in a passenger train derailment in Mexico’s southeastern Oaxaca region, the Mexican navy reported. The train carried 241 passengers and nine crew between Gulf Coast Coatzacoalcos and Pacific port Salina Cruz when it derailed rounding a bend near Nizanda.
Of 98 injured, 36 received hospital treatment, including five in serious condition, according to President Claudia Sheinbaum.
Rescue and probe
Photos showed rescue workers aiding passengers from the tilted train, partly over a cliff; top officials, including the Navy Secretary, headed to the site. Attorney General launched an investigation while Oaxaca Governor Salomón Jara expressed deep regret, coordinating state-federal aid.
The navy-operated Interoceanic, with two locomotives and four cars, forms key infrastructure.
Economic initiative
Inaugurated two years ago under former President López Obrador, the line modernizes Isthmus of Tehuantepec rail as a strategic trade corridor, boosting southern Mexico via expanded ports, railways, and industry for passenger-freight growth.
