Gaza Christmas in war ruins

Date:

After two years of Israeli bombardments, Gaza’s remaining Christians gather in standing churches for subdued Christmas celebrations marking resilience rather than joy. Young Palestinians decorate Holy Family Church with drawings, filling spaces with color despite no toys, festive meals, or safety.

Over 400 displaced families shelter there, sharing blankets and scarce supplies while explosions echo nearby.

Survival in Holy family parish

Father Gabriel Romanelli describes daily life as a survival struggle: hours queuing for limited water, relying on the church compound for refuge, prayers, and Eucharist. Power, clean water, medicines, and winter clothes shortages persist amid cold uncertainty.

No cheerful bells or processions – just restrictions and hovering dread.

Children’s hope persists

Palestinian children bring smiles, dreaming of freedom while families huddle in flooded tents. Celebrations evoke melancholy for war dead, yet embody endurance in besieged enclave.
