Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was arrested Tuesday in London during a pro-Palestinian protest. City of London Police took her into custody under the Terrorism Act for holding a sign reading “I support the Palestine Action prisoners. I oppose genocide.” UK authorities have proscribed Palestine Action as a terrorist group.
Police released Thunberg on bail until March. Two others faced arrest earlier for throwing red paint at a building linked to an insurance firm servicing Elbit Systems, an Israeli defence company.
Protest targets insurance firm
Prisoners for Palestine, which supports some detained activists who have gone on hunger strike, said the building had been targeted because it was used by an insurance firm which they said provided services to the British arm of Israeli defence firm Elbit Systems.
The insurance company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A 22-year-old woman, identified as Thunberg, later returned to the scene and was detained for displaying a placard supporting the proscribed organization.

Thunberg’s activism background
Thunberg became prominent with the 2018 climate protests outside Sweden’s parliament. Last year, a UK court cleared her of a public order offence from a prior London demonstration, ruling police lacked arrest powers.
In October, Israel detained and expelled her alongside 478 others from the Global Sumud Flotilla, an aid convoy attempting to reach Gaza. Israel denies genocide allegations.
