Greek actor Alberto Eskenazi dies at 73

Date:

Sadness has spread throughout the artistic community and beyond following the news of the death of Alberto Eskenazi, one of the most recognisable and consistently present actors of the Greek stage. He passed away at the age of 73, after a battle with a serious illness. Eskenazy served theatre, cinema and television with consistency and passion for decades.

He was born in Thessaloniki to a family with Jewish roots, where he spent his childhood and teenage years. He later studied acting at the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece, graduating in 1976.

Eskenazi starred in many television series, particularly during the 1980s, and also took part in theatrical productions (at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, among others), as well as in feature films and video films. The most characteristic of these was the 1988 video film titled The Road to Glory – The Star.

From a very young age, he worked professionally with Kostas Kazakos and Jenny Karezi. Among his many performances, his appearances in the dramatic television series The Notary—an adaptation of the work of the same name by Alexandros Rizos Rangavis (with Vasilis Diamantopoulos as the main protagonist)—stand out, as does The Light of the Morning Star, in which he co-starred with Koralia Karanti. He also lent his voice to dubbed animated productions.

From his marriage to Mary, Eskenazi had a son, Leon (born in 1983), and a daughter, Sara (born in 1987). For ten years, from 2001 to 2011, he created his own theatrical venue as well as an acting school.

He was also involved in politics, as he was a candidate in the 2024 European elections with the party Kosmos.
