The 58-year-old suspect in the premeditated murder of 26-year-old Alexandros Antoniou will remain in custody until the start of his trial on 29 January 2026, following a decision by the Paphos District Court.
The court, after examining the evidential material, underlined the seriousness of the offence, stressing that premeditated murder is one of the gravest crimes in the Penal Code and that, if the suspect were not detained, there would be a risk he might not appear at trial.
Key evidence from witnesses and CCTV
The decision took into account significant testimonies, while the closed-circuit television footage from the kiosk where the murder took place on 19 November was considered decisive.
Important testimony also came from a person who was speaking on the phone with the victim at the time of the attack.
In addition, genetic material detected on the back of the driver’s seat was identified as belonging to the 58-year-old, while the forensic report showed that death resulted from a wound inflicted by a sharp and cutting instrument to the carotid artery.
During the proceedings, the defence counsel described the incident and the loss as “tragic” but raised no objection to his client’s detention.
The court also directed that any necessary medical and pharmaceutical treatment be provided to the accused.
The case will be heard at the Paphos Permanent Assize Court on 29 January at 9 a.m.
