Visitor numbers to the Christmas villages have surged this year, offering a significant economic boost to Cyprus’ mountain communities and bringing life back to rural areas through the popular initiative. For many mountain villages, December has now become a “second August”, said Konstantinos Konstantinou, Officer at the Troodos Tourism Development and Promotion Company.
Speaking on SIGMA’s “Mesimeri kai Kati”, he noted that the initiative- run by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism- has achieved remarkable success, with multiple benefits for the communities involved. Even earlier this week, despite the rainy weather, visitors remained undeterred, strolling through the villages with umbrellas in hand to enjoy the Christmas villages experience in Cyprus.
Economic boost for rural areas
Konstantinou explained that the increased turnout is largely due to seasonality. During the winter months, villages are generally not popular destinations, except on snowy days. However, the establishment of the Christmas villages has transformed this pattern. At weekends, many visitors now travel either for a day trip or an overnight stay.
The initiative offers a vital economic lifeline for local businesses. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, from children’s workshops to cultural events, all woven into the festive atmosphere created by the Christmas villages programme, enhanced with the unique flavour of Cyprus’ culture.
Festive experiences and connection with village life
Stalls selling local products allow people to buy gifts ahead of the holidays, while organised tours and artistic performances add to the festive charm. Singers and various musical and dance groups participate in the programme, creating a lively seasonal experience and giving visitors the chance to explore Cyprus’ mountain communities.
Konstantinou encouraged the public to visit the Christmas villages page and choose the activities that appeal to them, highlighting the continued success of Christmas villages in revitalising rural tourism.
