In 2025 Cyprus, thousands of people with disabilities remain cut off from everyday life, not because of their condition, but because the system blocks them.
Sigma’s investigative programme “Code 56” gave voice to those affected.
Blind citizens lose rights: “We still don’t follow a human-rights approach. As a result, many rights are simply taken away from us.”
Deaf people stay invisible in public services “We take a number, sit and wait… and wait. We stare into space. The person next to us gets called. We don’t hear. ‘Sorry, I’m deaf – was that my turn?’ Too late, you lost your turn.”
Wheelchair users face closed doors: “Even in healthcare we hit serious accessibility barriers.” Buildings, streets and jobs remain out of reach for paraplegics.
Cyprus boasts of development, modern towers and “smart cities”. Yet for thousands of citizens the country stays hostile.
Experts highlight chronic shortcomings:
- schools
- hospitals
- government offices
The state does not even collect proper data on disability.
