Yellow warning for storms in Cyprus issued again

Date:

The Department of Meteorology issued a new yellow warning for storms in Cyprus, effective from 5 am today Tuesday until 5 am on Wednesday.

Heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms will affect the island at intervals. Thunderstorms may produce hail, while winds will shift and strengthen. Rainfall intensity could reach 35–55 millimetres per hour, with local areas possibly recording more than 55 millimetres in 24 hours.

Low-pressure system “Byron” affects the region

The low-pressure system “Byron” continues to influence Cyprus weather today. Clouds will dominate the sky, with local rain and isolated thunderstorms expected at times. Hail remains possible during thunderstorms.

Winds will blow mainly northeast to variable, moderate and locally strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will range from slightly rough to rough. Temperatures will rise to 17°C inland, around 20°C on the coast and 8°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight and the coming days

Tonight, clouds will persist with periods of local rain and isolated thunderstorms, again with possible hail. Winds will turn mainly northerly to north-easterly, light to moderate (3–4 Beaufort) and occasionally stronger (4–5 Beaufort). The sea will stay slightly rough to rough. Temperatures will drop to 12°C inland, around 14°C on the coast and 4°C in the higher mountains, where frost may form locally.

On Wednesday, cloudy conditions continue with local rain and isolated thunderstorms. Thursday will bring partly cloudy skies and occasional showers, with an isolated thunderstorm possible; weather will improve noticeably from late afternoon. Friday will be partly cloudy.

Temperatures will show little change over the next three days and remain close to average seasonal values.
