Diver killed in shark attack on remote New Zealand islands

Date:

A 24-year-old diver lost his life following a shark attack on the remote Chatham Islands in New Zealand, police announced on Tuesday.

“Emergency services were called around midday after reports that a man diving from a boat had been seriously injured,” police stated.

The victim was taken to a hospital on the Chatham Islands, located approximately 850 kilometres east of New Zealand’s South Island, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased was identified as Jade Kahukore-Dixon, the owner and director of Nomad Diving Ltd.

Unlike Australia or South Africa, shark attacks are rare in New Zealand. The last fatal attack occurred in 2013 when a 46-year-old man was killed by a shark at Muriwai Beach, west of Auckland.
