Former Presidents to get state car for only 5 years

Date:

The House Institutions Committee decided Wednesday to slash post-tenure perks for former Presidents of the Republic and former House Speakers.

The bill heading to plenary:

  • Official car provided for only 5 years after leaving office
  • Fuel and maintenance allowance abolished
  • Lifelong secretary allowance remains untouched

Independent MP Alexandra Attalides (Volt Cyprus) strongly opposed the compromise.

Speaking after the session, she called the issue “primarily institutional, not just financial”: “Democracy should not mean unlimited lifelong privileges. Public office ends with the term – not with death.”

Attalides announced she will table two amendments in plenary:

  1. End the secretary allowance after 5 years (“more than enough to write memoirs and organise archives”)
  2. Immediately terminate all benefits if a former president takes another paid public or state-linked post (“unthinkable for the state to keep paying someone who chooses another office”)

The amended bill now goes to full House vote.
