Israel will open the Rafah crossing in the coming days so Gaza residents can exit to Egypt, COGAT announced Wednesday.
The move follows political orders and the US-backed ceasefire plan. Israel coordinates with Egypt and the EU mission that supervised the January 2025 opening.
Only outbound travel from Gaza is allowed now – no entry from Egypt. Every person needs Israeli security clearance.
Rafah briefly opened in January during the previous two-month truce for medical evacuations and aid deliveries.
The UN and aid groups have demanded this step for months. Israel captured the Gaza side in May 2024, claiming Hamas used it to smuggle weapons.
The crossing sits at Gaza’s southern border with Egypt’s Sinai – the enclave’s main lifeline for aid, fuel and medical evacuations since the 2007 blockade.
