Kofinou tragedy: Driver faces serious charges after fatal crash

Date:

Famagusta District Court ordered a three-day remand Sunday for the 22-year-old driver whose double-cab overturned near Kofinou, causing a fatal crash early Saturday. The rollover claimed the life of 17-year-old passenger Aliki Nikolaou from Lympia.

Police told the court they investigate the driver for causing death by negligent act, negligent and dangerous driving, refusal to give a final breath sample, operating a vehicle in dangerous condition, driving without a fitness certificate and driving without road tax after the Road Transport Department had suspended the licence.

A roadside breath test showed 37mg of alcohol – far above the 22mg legal limit – but the driver refused a proper sample for the final test.

The defence raised no objection to remand.

State pathologist Orthodoxos Orthodoxou will perform the post-mortem on Aliki, the only victim of the fatal crash in Kofinou, tomorrow.
