Trump urges Japanese PM to ease tensions with China over Taiwan

Date:

US President Donald Trump advised Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi this week to avoid further escalation in the dispute with China over Taiwan sovereignty.

The Wall Street Journal reported the recommendation on Wednesday, citing Japanese officials and a US government source.

Trump spoke with Takaichi after a lengthy call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi spent nearly half the conversation stressing Taiwan’s status as a Chinese province and Beijing’s claim to it.

Diplomatic row triggered by Takaichi’s remarks

Takaichi sparked the biggest Tokyo-Beijing clash in years earlier this month. She told Japan’s parliament that a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan could threaten Japan’s survival and justify military response.

Beijing reacted furiously, demanding a retraction. China summoned the Japanese ambassador and warned its citizens against travel to Japan.

Trump’s subtle message

Sources said Trump’s advice was subtle. He did not pressure Takaichi to retract but acknowledged her domestic political constraints.

Japanese officials expressed unease, viewing the message as Trump’s desire to protect his recent diplomatic thaw with Xi, including China’s pledge to buy more US agricultural products amid the trade war.

Takaichi’s office confirmed the call discussed US-China ties but provided no further details.

Japan maintains its Taiwan policy remains unchanged.
