China warns citizens against Japan travel

Date:

China’s embassy in Japan warned its citizens to avoid visiting Japan in the near future. It cited reports from multiple nationals who suffered unprovoked insults, beatings, and injuries in recent days.

The embassy advised Chinese already in Japan to increase personal safety measures. It posted the announcement on its account on Chinese social media and referenced data showing a rise in violent crimes in Japan in recent years.

China first issued the travel advisory on 14 November, in the midst of the worst diplomatic dispute between the East Asian powers in years. The row began after Japan’s prime minister stated that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could equate to a survival-threatening situation and trigger a military response from Tokyo.
