Heavy rain and hail expected across Cyprus today

Date:

Cyprus is in for another unsettled day, with heavy rain and hail on the cards as a low-pressure system disrupts local weather conditions. Periods of increased cloud cover, local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected from this morning onwards.

The first storms are anticipated over the island’s northern areas, the interior and eastern districts. As the day progresses, activity will shift south of Troodos, affecting the southern coastline and later moving east. In any thunderstorm, heavy rain and hail are possible. Winds will shift throughout the day, strengthening by late afternoon along the western and northern coasts.

According to the official forecast, morning winds will generally blow from the northwest to northeast at 3–4 Beaufort, gradually turning southwesterly to northwesterly by midday. By evening, winds will settle from the northwest to north, reaching 4–5 Beaufort in the west and north. Seas will range from calm to slightly rough, becoming choppy later in the west and north. Temperatures will rise to around 23°C inland and along the western and northern coasts, 25°C in the south and east, and 12°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight, increased cloud cover is expected, mainly in the eastern half of the island, with isolated showers or a possible storm in eastern and northern coastal areas and parts of the interior. Winds will remain northwesterly to northeasterly at 3–4 Beaufort inland and up to 5 Beaufort along the coasts. Minimum temperatures will drop to 12°C inland, 14°C on the coasts and 6°C in the mountains.

Saturday will be mostly clear, though clouds south of Troodos may bring isolated showers after midday. Sunday will stay largely fine with some passing cloud, while Monday begins clear before turning partly cloudy with the chance of light, isolated showers. Temperatures will fall slightly on Saturday, settling near or just below average, before climbing again by Monday to above seasonal norms.
