A moderate Paphos earthquake was recorded late on Thursday morning, with the tremor felt across several districts but causing no reports of damage. The quake struck at 11:27am local time, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
Location and depth
The earthquake was measured at magnitude 4.4, with its epicentre located 14km east of Paphos and roughly 44km west of Limassol. It occurred at a shallow depth of around 17.7km, a factor that typically makes shaking more noticeable even in lower-magnitude events.
Other agencies reported similar readings: Germany’s GFZ also recorded a magnitude of 4.4, while Greece’s National Observatory of Athens (NOA) listed it at magnitude 4.2. Final figures may be revised as seismologists review incoming data.
Felt in several communities
The Paphos earthquake was widely felt in surrounding communities. Light shaking was reported in areas closest to the epicentre, including villages such as Kelokedara, located just 2km away.
Residents in Geroskipou and Paphos town reported weak to light shaking. The tremor was also felt in parts of Limassol, Kato Polemidia, Germasogeia, and as far as Nicosia, though with reduced intensity.
Despite the widespread reports, the quake is not expected to have caused damage beyond minor disturbances such as falling objects or rattling windows.
