Minister of Transport: Need for road safety education in schools

Date:

Transport Minister Alexis Vafeadis highlighted the need for a comprehensive reassessment of road safety issues, emphasising the role of human behaviour. His comments followed the deaths of four young people in two separate road accidents yesterday in Frenaros, and Nicosia.

Speaking to the “First News” programme, he stated that significant gaps exist in road safety awareness and driver education, stressing the importance of introducing road safety lessons into school curriculums.

The Transport Minister added that the Driver Offender School should also function as a Road Safety Awareness School.

“We must revisit the issue of road safety,” he added, “in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice, the Police, and other relevant agencies.”

Mr Vafeadis expressed the view that particular attention should be paid to monitoring road conditions over weekends, as both fatal accidents occurred on Saturday night into Sunday.
