Turkey has welcomed the decision by the so-called “parliament” of the breakaway administration in the occupied north to approve a resolution in favour of a two-state solution in Cyprus.
The resolution, titled “Two-state solution to the Cyprus issue,” was passed by majority vote in the self-styled “assembly” of the occupied territories- an act Turkish media described as a “significant development” in the Turkish-occupied side’s stance.
Turkish Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz immediately hailed the decision, calling it “a strong expression of the Turkish Cypriot people’s will to protect their sovereignty, identity, and future.”
Posting on the platform NSosyal, Yılmaz wrote that the federal model under discussion for the past fifty years “has now been exhausted” and cannot lead to a viable solution.
He argued that a “realistic, sustainable, and fair solution on the island” can only be achieved “on the basis of two sovereign and equal states.”
Yılmaz congratulated the “MPs” of the illegal regime for their stance, saying they were defending “the future and dignity of the Turkish Cypriot people,” and reaffirmed that Turkey would continue to “steadfastly support” the Turkish Cypriots’ so-called “right to self-determination.”
