Low-pressure system Barbara to bring rain and thunderstorms

Date:

A low-pressure system named Barbara, centred over mainland Greece, is moving east and is expected to affect Cyprus from Tuesday night.

Today, skies will be partly cloudy at times. Winds will blow mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, initially light to moderate, force 3 to 4 Beaufort, later becoming moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will be slightly rough and locally up to rough along the western and northern coasts. Temperatures will reach around 29°C inland, at the southern and eastern coasts, around 27°C in the west and north, and 21°C in the higher mountains.

Tonight, periods of increased cloud cover are expected. Winds will gradually turn north-westerly to north-easterly, remaining mostly light, around force 3 Beaufort. The sea will be calm to slightly rough. Temperatures will drop to around 17°C inland, 18°C along the coasts and 9°C in the mountains.

On Tuesday, when the low-pressure system Barbara is expected to arrive, skies will be partly cloudy, while local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected in the evening, first in the west and gradually in other areas of the island.

Local showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected at times on Wednesday and Thursday as well. Temperatures will gradually fall until Thursday, remaining below average for the season.
