ON THIS DAY: Munich Olympics massacre (1972)

Date:

On this day in 1972, the Munich Olympics massacre shocked the world when 11 Israeli athletes were taken hostage and later killed by the Palestinian group Black September.

The attack began on 5 September, when armed militants stormed the Olympic Village in Munich, Germany, targeting the Israeli team. Two athletes were killed during the initial assault, while nine others were held hostage.

Despite negotiations and a botched rescue attempt by German authorities at Fürstenfeldbruck airbase, all nine hostages were killed. A German police officer also died in the operation.

The Munich Olympics massacre remains one of the darkest moments in Olympic history, highlighting global tensions and the threat of terrorism on international sporting events. The tragedy led to major changes in Olympic security protocols in the years that followed.
