A Cypriot man is detained in the occupied areas after he and a friend were unlawfully arrested on 30 May while attempting to cross into the occupied territories.
Their “arrest” took place at the Agios Dometios checkpoint. The reason was 49 PlayStation consoles which, according to the 34-year-old “detainee”, were entirely legal and had been declared to the customs authorities of the Republic of Cyprus. The “customs officers” of the pseudo-state, however, seemed to take a different view: while at first they said they would only hold the consoles, they later claimed that “customs officers” from headquarters would take over.
Since then, the two compatriots have remained “invisible”, the 34-year-old told SigmaLive, stressing that although all the authorities of the Republic of Cyprus are aware of the case, nothing is being done for their “release”.
At present, the two are “free” on bail from the so-called court of the occupied areas.
Deplorable detention conditions
Through SigmaLive, our compatriot wanted to denounce the inhumane detention conditions he endured in occupied Trikomo. The young man suffers from a chronic illness and, as he said, needs to take a large number of pills daily — something the “police officers” completely ignored.
“Our friends would bring us food, but we were only given it the next day. They offered us drinking water from the rubbish.”
According to the 34-year-old, the so-called police forcibly cut off the cross he wore around his neck.
