Rival forces increase surveillance in EEZ Cyprus

Date:

The Eastern Mediterranean remains a focal point of military surveillance operations, as rival forces increase surveillance in Eastern Mediterranean airspace and waters. Turkish, American and Russian assets have all been observed conducting missions in recent days, highlighting the region’s strategic importance and mounting geopolitical tensions.

On the morning of 27 August 2025, flight-tracking data showed a Turkish ATR-72-600 MPA maritime patrol aircraft (tail code TCB-755 / TURNA73) flying a monitoring mission west of Cyprus. The aircraft, part of Turkey’s naval aviation, frequently patrols this specific zone, which is considered of high geostrategic value.

Around the same time, an unusual mission was logged by a US Navy P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, which took off from Sigonella, Sicily. After initially operating off the Syrian coast, it shifted southward and began flying in circles off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt.

This surge in aerial activity coincided with the presence of the Russian tug Jakob Grebelsky, which had spent nearly 20 days off Tartus — a former Russian naval base — before moving over 400 kilometres south in a single day. Reports suggest the tug is providing support to the Russian submarine Novorossiysk, which is believed to be operating in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Military analysts believe the Poseidon’s flight path likely served an intelligence-gathering purpose, aimed at monitoring Russian naval movements in the area. The loss of Russia’s base in Tartus has significantly curtailed its ability to maintain a continuous maritime presence in the region.

The simultaneous activity of Turkish, US and Russian forces underscores the growing geopolitical competition unfolding in the Eastern Mediterranean. Cyprus and Egypt have once again emerged as central points of interest in a zone where strategic control and surveillance are key priorities for major powers.
