On 1 August, the Cypriot flag Carstensz Pyramid was raised on one of the most inaccessible peaks on the planet.
Cypriot climbers Roman Starikovits and Maxim Riashchin successfully reached the summit of Carstensz Pyramid (also known as Puncak Jaya), at 4,884 metres, in the remote Maoke range of Papua. This is the highest peak in Australia and Oceania and one of the legendary “Seven Summits” that every mountaineer dreams of conquering.
The ascent was carried out as part of an international expedition that also included climbers from the United States and Canada. The achievement is especially significant given that in all of recorded history, fewer than 2,000 people have ever stood on the summit of Carstensz Pyramid- a figure ten times smaller than those who have reached Everest.
Even more impressively, this was only the second successful climb of the mountain in 2025, underlining the scale of the accomplishment by the two Cypriot climbers.
