ON THIS DAY: Linus Pauling died (1994)

Date:

On this day in 1994, Linus Pauling- one of the most influential scientists and activists of the 20th century- passed away at the age of 93. To this day, Pauling remains the only individual to have received two unshared Nobel Prizes: the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962.

A pioneer in science

Linus Pauling revolutionised modern chemistry with his work on the nature of the chemical bond. His 1954 Nobel recognised research that laid the foundations of molecular biology and helped explain the structure of complex compounds like proteins and DNA. His textbook The Nature of the Chemical Bond became one of the most cited scientific works of the 20th century.

He also advanced the understanding of sickle-cell anaemia, demonstrating that it was a molecular disease- a breakthrough that linked genetics, chemistry, and medicine in a way no one had done before.

A voice for peace

Beyond the laboratory, Pauling was an outspoken critic of nuclear weapons testing. In 1962, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his tireless campaign against atmospheric nuclear testing, including presenting a petition signed by over 11,000 scientists to the United Nations. His efforts were instrumental in paving the way for the Partial Test Ban Treaty later that year.

Pauling’s peace activism was controversial in Cold War America. He was accused of communist sympathies, denied a passport, and often criticised for his outspoken views. Yet he persisted, insisting that scientists had a moral duty to confront the dangers of nuclear war.

Legacy

By the time of his death in 1994, Pauling had become both a scientific legend and a symbol of principled dissent. His unique achievement- being awarded both the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the Nobel Peace Prize, each individually- stands as a reminder of the power of science not only to expand knowledge but also to safeguard humanity.
