Greece leads on wildfires, third day of battles

Date:

Wildfires in western Greece and Chios have been raging for a third consecutive day, with thousands of firefighters and volunteers battling to contain the flames that have already destroyed homes, wildlife, and natural habitats.

Emergency services are stretched thin across the country as multiple fire fronts remain active. The situation is particularly severe in Achaia, where scattered hotspots are complicating efforts. Conditions in Chios and Filippiada have improved, while fires in Preveza and Arta are reportedly subsiding.

More than 100,000 hectares have been scorched, leaving behind ruined farmland, homes, and infrastructure. Several areas remain without electricity.

Special arson investigation units are operating in affected regions, examining video footage, photographs, and witness accounts to determine the causes of the fires.

According to reports by SKAI, several of the fire outbreaks — including those in Achaia, Gymnotopos in Preveza, and Chios — are being linked to possible faults in power pylons operated by DEDDIE, the Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator. Investigators are reviewing images that show high-voltage cables tangled in tree branches, sparking under strong winds.

Meanwhile, arson is being investigated in other regions. In Zakynthos, Sychaina (Patras), Vonitsa, and Flampoura (Preveza), police are focusing on deliberate acts. A 25-year-old man from Achaia has already been arrested in connection with a fire near a care home in Patras.

Specific locations under scrutiny include:

  • Chios: Investigators are examining whether the blaze began from high-voltage power lines near wind turbines.
  • Gymnotopos, Preveza: Photos show a sparking power pylon in a forested area shortly before the fire started.
  • Sychaina, Patras: Witnesses and video suggest two individuals were seen acting suspiciously near the origin of the fire.
  • Koiliomenos, Zakynthos: A 59-year-old man, previously arrested for arson in the same area last year, is again under investigation.
  • Paliampela and Vatos, Vonitsa: Fires broke out at three different times early Tuesday morning in remote areas. Authorities are focusing on two suspects.
  • Flampoura, Preveza: Witness statements and photos point to a blue scooter and its rider seen at the fire’s starting point.

As the wildfires in western Greece and Chios continue to pose serious threats, authorities remain on high alert. Investigations are expected to intensify in the coming days.
