The Department of Labour Inspection (DLI) of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance has announced a mandatory heatwave work ban in Cyprus following the Meteorological Department’s red-level alert for extremely high temperatures.
Under the new measures, all heavy and moderate outdoor work must be suspended between 11:00 and 17:00. Additionally, the transport or delivery of goods using motorcycles, bicycles, or electric scooters must be halted between 12:00 and 16:00. The heatwave work ban applies to inland areas (altitudes below 300 metres and more than 10 kilometres from the coast) and to high mountain regions above 1,150 metres.
For areas and activities not covered by the red-level alert, the DLI reminds employers and workers that the provisions of the Code of Practice for the Thermal Stress of Employees still apply.
Employers and self-employed workers are required to measure the temperature and relative humidity in work areas, as both contribute to heat load. Depending on the conditions, they must adapt work by changing tasks, allowing rest breaks, or stopping entirely, taking into account the nature of the job. Organisational and technical measures should be implemented to prevent or reduce heat stress.
These measures include frequent short breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces and, where possible, installing suitable shelters. Workers should be rotated between tasks, and strenuous outdoor activities should be avoided during the hottest hours (12:00–16:00). Employees must have access to cool drinking water at 10–15°C, wear suitable head coverings, light, loose-fitting cotton clothing, and protective sunglasses.
It is also recommended to avoid heavy meals, sugary foods, alcohol, and caffeine. Training should be provided so workers can recognise the symptoms of heat stress and take the necessary preventive measures.
