Audit of agriculture ministry reveals irregularities and concerns

Date:

A special audit of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment has revealed a series of irregularities, delays, and environmental concerns. The Audit Office report, published on 5 August 2025, highlights potential breaches of environmental directives, questionable planning decisions, and shortcomings in the management of public funds.

The audit of agriculture ministry notes delays in Cyprus’ compliance with EU environmental obligations, as well as controversial zoning changes in protected areas. Allegations have also emerged regarding developments by politically exposed persons without the required permits.

In addition, the report identifies serious weaknesses in the management of state subsidies and public money, with inconsistencies in the allocation and monitoring of grants. These issues raise concerns about transparency, accountability, and effective oversight of public resources.

The Audit Office has called on the ministry to take immediate corrective action, enhance compliance systems, and ensure closer alignment with both national and EU environmental standards.
