The Paleo Faliro dead girl investigation has taken a dramatic turn as police arrested the woman seen in surveillance footage with a stroller matching the child’s clothing. The woman, identified as the girl’s mother, has reportedly confessed, with her statement still in progress.
The Algerian national, who is in Greece without legal documents, was taken to the Attica Police Headquarters (GADA) and later to the Floisvos Coast Guard station for questioning.
Preliminary information suggests that she told investigators the three‑year‑old girl had been unwell on Saturday night. According to her account, while in the bathroom the child slipped, fell, and hit her head, causing a swelling. Fearing the girl was dead but unable to go to a hospital due to her lack of legal status, she decided to abandon the girl at the beach in Paleo Faliro. She claims the child was still alive at that point.
The children’s father, believed to be a Syrian national, is missing. Authorities suspect a history of domestic violence, with the father allegedly abusive towards both the mother and the children. He may also be sought for questioning.
How police tracked down the mother
Investigators focused on security camera footage showing the woman with two children and a stroller in Palaio Faliro. A key breakthrough came from an Israeli tourist who had taken a taxi before the woman. His information helped police identify the driver, who recalled dropping her in Patissia.
Coast Guard and police discreetly monitored the area. Early this morning, 1 August, at 6:45 a.m., the woman called for a taxi with her two children. Authorities intervened and arrested her. She is now at GADA, while the children are under the supervision of child protection services and expected to speak with the juvenile prosecutor.
Details from the footage
Video shows the woman with two children and the stroller near Edem beach. At one point, she stops at a kiosk before leaving the area. Another camera later captures her taking a taxi with only the two older children.
In a detail noted by investigators, in the second video she appears to be wearing her dress backwards- possibly an indication of haste to leave the beach quickly.
The girl, later confirmed to have a metabolic condition, was found wearing a hat despite the late hour and had her face covered in the stroller. Authorities are considering the impact of the extreme heatwave on her health, which may explain why the mother took the children to the beach that night.
