Yellow weather warning as temperatures hit 41°C

Date:

A yellow weather warning has been issued for Monday, with inland temperatures expected to reach a scorching 41°C, according to the Cyprus Department of Meteorology.

The warning notes that maximum temperatures will soar to 41°C inland and 33°C in the highest mountain regions today. A gradual drop in temperature is forecast over the coming days, returning to seasonal averages.

Currently, the region is affected by a seasonal low-pressure system and a warm air mass. Skies will be mostly clear, although early morning hours may see localised low clouds or fog, especially near coastal areas.

Winds will initially blow from the southeast to southwest at light force 3 Beaufort, gradually shifting to southwest to northwest, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and temporarily strong at 5 Beaufort along southern coasts. Seas will be slightly rough. Temperatures will climb to 41°C inland, 32°C on the western coast, around 34°C on other coasts, and 33°C in higher elevations.

Tonight will remain mostly clear, although increased low cloud, mist, or fog is expected to form, particularly around dawn. Winds will gradually shift to northwest to northeast, with southeastern breezes on the northern coast, all at light 3 Beaufort. The sea will remain slightly rough. Overnight temperatures will drop to around 24°C inland and on the coasts, and 21°C in the mountains.

From Tuesday through Thursday, the weather will stay mostly clear with occasional local cloudiness. The yellow weather warning will likely be lifted as temperatures continue to fall gradually, stabilising around the climatological norm.
