Heatwave safety tips issued by Civil Defence authorities

Date:

With extreme temperatures affecting inland Cyprus, the Civil Defence Force has issued heatwave safety tips to help the public minimise health risks and stay protected.

Following the yellow weather warning issued by the Meteorology Department for Monday 21 July (in effect from 12:00 to 17:00), Civil Defence urged residents to take preventive measures as temperatures are expected to hit 40°C inland and 32°C in the mountains.

The warning comes as Cyprus experiences a prolonged heatwave, with health officials especially concerned for the elderly and vulnerable populations.

Heatwave safety tips from Civil Defence:

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity, especially physical labour under direct sun.
  • Refrain from sunbathing, jogging or walking for extended periods.
  • Stay away from crowded and poorly ventilated indoor spaces.
  • Wear light, breathable, and light-coloured clothing.
  • Protect your head with a hat and wear high-quality sunglasses.
  • Eat small, light meals rich in fruit and vegetables; avoid heavy or fatty foods.
  • Drink plenty of water and natural juices to stay hydrated.
  • Avoid alcohol and sudden changes in temperature (e.g. moving from heat into cold water).
  • Use fans or air conditioning to keep indoor spaces cool.
  • Check on elderly relatives, neighbours, or those needing care.
  • If health issues arise, consult a doctor immediately.

The Civil Defence Force reminds the public that preparedness is key during high heat periods- and that even minor changes to daily routines can prevent serious heat-related illnesses.
