Eirini Mourtzoukou is expected to give a full account of her role in the tragic deaths of five children, during her testimony before the investigator scheduled for Sunday, her lawyer confirmed on Friday.
Speaking to Greek broadcaster ERT, defence attorney Nikos Alexandris said that Mourtzoukou intends to speak openly and accept her share of the blame, while also emphasising that she is not solely responsible for what happened.
“She will confess everything, indifferent to the consequences, because she wants to be free of the burden and take responsibility for her part,” Alexandris stated.
“But the entire blame does not lie with her.”
He added that her full statement is currently being finalised and that further clarity on the case would emerge shortly.
“We will soon see what really happened in every instance,” he said.
The defence has also raised concerns about the strength of the prosecution’s case. Alexandris claimed the case file is incomplete, pointing out that it lacks forensic reports and was closed solely on the basis of Mourtzoukou’s confession.
“It’s not watertight. The investigation is not complete,” he argued, stopping short of revealing further details due to the upcoming deposition.
The Mourtzoukou case has sparked public outcry due to the emotional weight of the tragedy and the unanswered questions surrounding the deaths. While Mourtzoukou is preparing to testify, her defence maintains that others must also be held accountable.
