ON THIS DAY: Aviation history was made, twice

Date:

On 2 July 1900, aviation history began a bold new chapter with the first zeppelin flight over Lake Constance in southern Germany. Designed by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin, the rigid airship launched from a floating hangar near Friedrichshafen and was powered by two internal combustion engines. It flew for just 18 minutes, covering six kilometres, but its success marked the beginning of a new era in air travel.

Despite some control issues, the airship’s design was revolutionary. Zeppelins would soon become synonymous with early long-distance aviation, offering luxury travel experiences high above Europe and beyond. Their massive frames and floating elegance captured the world’s imagination- until the Hindenburg disaster ended the airship age in flames.

Exactly 37 years later, aviation history took a darker turn. On 2 July 1937, Amelia Earhart, one of the most celebrated pilots of her time, disappeared over the Pacific during her attempt to circumnavigate the globe. Last heard from near Howland Island, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan vanished without a trace, despite one of the most extensive search efforts in history.

But Earhart’s legacy goes far beyond her final flight. She was a pioneering aviator, the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and a powerful advocate for women’s rights. A bestselling author, lecturer, and founder of the Ninety-Nines- an organisation for female pilots- she shattered expectations in a field dominated by men and inspired generations of women to reach for the skies.

Both events- the first zeppelin flight and the disappearance of Amelia Earhart- are milestones in humanity’s journey to master the skies. They remind us of the boundless ambition and real risks that have always defined aviation’s evolution.
