Historic Nicosia venue demolished after decades

Date:

A landmark chapter in Nicosia’s social history has come to an end with the demolition of the once-iconic Makedonitissa Palace. The historic Nicosia venue, known for decades as a hub of celebration, was torn down on Tuesday, 1 July, marking the close of an era for countless Cypriots.

Originally known as the Kentro Makedonitissas, the venue was synonymous with weddings, baptisms, and family gatherings throughout the capital. Located next to the Church of Panagia Makedonitissa, it gained prominence for its ideal setting and elegant outdoor features- most famously, its ornamental pool with swans, a rare attraction in 1960s Nicosia.

Over the years, the venue evolved with the city. Outdoor areas were gradually built over, and the name changed to Makedonitissa Palace. Despite these changes, its legacy endured. Generations of families celebrated life’s milestones within its walls.

However, the site fell into decline in recent years. A lack of maintenance and unresolved financial issues between tenants and the venue’s owner, the Archbishopric, led to its closure. With no operator and no clear path forward, the decision was made to demolish the building.

Its loss has stirred nostalgia across the city, as residents reflect on the memories tied to a place that once defined Nicosia’s social life.
