SafeCY shelter app sees over 88,000 downloads

Date:

The SafeCY shelter app has been installed on over 88,000 mobile phones as of 20 June, according to figures from the Civil Defence. The app allows citizens to locate their nearest emergency shelter using GPS or postal code, and demand for it has surged since its release.

Speaking to Sigma TV, Deputy Press Spokesperson for Civil Defence, Chara Lazarou, confirmed that the number may now be even higher, as uptake continues to grow. The SafeCY shelter app is still being improved, with updates based on feedback from users.

“Citizens can contact us directly through the app- by phone or email- and give suggestions,” she said. “We’re using this feedback to make continuous improvements.”

Reports of poor shelter conditions fuel inspections

Some users have reported shelters in poor condition, but Civil Defence sees these complaints as helpful rather than negative. “They allow us to carry out targeted inspections,” Lazarou explained, noting that while regular checks are already in place, it’s impossible to monitor everything without public input.

In previous reports, concerns were raised about shelters being dirty or unsafe, with some images circulating online showing basements in disrepair. Civil Defence has responded by accelerating improvements. Michaella Mala, Senior Officer, stated that population coverage has risen from 30% in 2024 to 50% today, with a goal of reaching 70%.

Maintenance and cleanliness remain the responsibility of property owners, though Civil Defence handles structural elements like metal doors and access covers. If notified of issues, officials contact owners and urge them to act, though they cannot intervene on private property.

By law, building managers have 24 hours to prepare shelters once alerted by the authorities.

Future shelters under discussion

Lazarou added that Civil Defence is studying a proposal to mandate shelters in all newly constructed apartment buildings. The recommendation is still under review, with no official policy yet in place.
