Eurostat sounds the alarm over Cyprus’ green transition – Low share of electricity from renewables – Fourth lowest in the EU
Cyprus continues to show no signs of substantial progress in the field of renewable energy, once again ranking among the lowest EU countries in terms of clean electricity production.
According to figures published on Thursday by Eurostat, Cyprus holds the fourth-lowest share of net electricity generation from renewable energy sources across the EU.
EU-wide decline
In the first quarter of 2025, 42.5% of the EU’s net electricity generation came from renewable sources. Compared to the first quarter of 2024, this represents a decline of 4.3 percentage points (from 46.8%).
The biggest drops in the share of renewables in electricity production were recorded in Greece, followed by Lithuania (-12.0 percentage points) and Slovakia (-10.6 percentage points).
Among EU countries, Denmark had the highest share of renewables in electricity generation in Q1 2025 (88.5%), followed by Portugal (86.6%) and Croatia (77.3%). The lowest shares were reported in Czechia (13.4%), Malta (14.4%), and Slovakia (15.1%).
