Putin on NATO: no threat to Russia’s defences

Date:

Putin on Nato: Russian president Vladimir Putin has downplayed concerns over NATO’s military expansion, insisting that it poses no threat to Russia. Speaking to international journalists in Saint Petersburg, he declared that Russia’s own defensive capabilities are sufficient to meet any challenge.

“We do not consider any NATO rearmament a threat to the Russian Federation,” said Putin. “We are self-sufficient in terms of security. Our armed forces and our defensive capabilities are continuously improving.”

The comments came as part of a wide-ranging interview in which Putin on NATO was only one of several headline topics. He also claimed that Russian forces continue to advance along the Ukrainian front, stating, “Our troops are advancing every day along the entire line of contact. Some days it is more, some days less- but every day.”

Addressing the war’s political future, Putin said he was prepared to meet with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, but only at the final stage of negotiations. “I’m ready to meet with him, but only if it’s the last step in the talks,” he said. However, he also questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy, noting that his presidential term formally ended in May 2024 and that no elections have been held due to martial law. Critics note that the suspension of elections in Ukraine is a direct result of the Russian invasion, making Putin’s questioning of Zelensky’s legitimacy appear disingenuous.

The Putin on NATO remarks are part of a broader messaging effort from the Kremlin, which continues to portray Russia as strong, steady, and advancing on all fronts, both militarily and diplomatically.
