Israel’s foreign minister criticises Erdoğan over Cyprus ‘hypocrisy’

Date:

The Israeli foreign minister criticises Erdoğan for hypocrisy over Cyprus, accusing the Turkish president of moral double standards and pointing to Turkey’s ongoing occupation of the island’s north.

Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, issued a strong rebuke in response to Erdoğan’s latest comments on Gaza, saying: “You are occupying northern Cyprus, massacring Kurds, silencing journalists and jailing political opponents. Don’t talk to us about morality.”

The foreign minister criticises Erdoğan not only over Israel–Gaza tensions but also for Turkey’s broader record on human rights and regional aggression. His statement has drawn attention in Cyprus, where Turkish forces have occupied around 37% of the island since 1974 — an occupation condemned by the international community.

Katz’s remarks were widely shared in Greek and Cypriot media, particularly due to their direct reference to Cyprus and strong tone. While Erdoğan has repeatedly attacked Israel’s military operations, Israeli officials argue that his criticisms are undermined by his own actions and policies.

This is not the first time a foreign minister criticises Erdoğan over perceived hypocrisy. Similar statements have emerged from European officials in the past, but Katz’s remarks stand out for their bluntness and directness in the current geopolitical climate.
