Fire Service responds to 16 incidents due to heavy rain and winds

Date:

Over the past 24 hours, the Fire Service has responded to 16 incidents across Cyprus due to heavy rainfall and strong winds.

According to a post on X by Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, Limassol Fire Stations responded to eight incidents involving fallen trees, water pumping from basements, water extraction from properties, vehicle towing, and the clearing of stormwater drains from flooded roads. Famagusta Fire Stations also responded to eight incidents, including water pumping from house basements, clearing of stormwater drains on flooded roads, and towing of a vehicle.

Additionally, the Fire Service responded to 50 incidents in the last 24 hours, including 17 fires and 33 special assistance cases. Among the most notable incidents was EMAK’s response with a team of climbers to rescue an injured hunter in the rural area of Delikipos, in a difficult-to-access ravine. Rescuers reached the injured individual, stabilised him, and placed him on a rescue stretcher, transporting him over rugged terrain from a mountaintop to the ambulance waiting area.

Another incident involved the response of Larnaca Firefighters with two staffed fire engines to a fire involving a commercial vehicle parked on a dead-end road in Oroklini. According to Mr. Kettis, the vehicle sustained extensive damage from the fire, which also burned a small area of dry grass. The cause of the fire will be investigated later today.
