Authorities in Limassol are investigating the tragic death of 43-year-old Giorgos Constantinou, who lost his life after a fatal fall at a construction site in the Potamos Germasogeias area. The incident occurred on May 7 when police received information around 14:30 regarding a workplace accident at an under-construction building.
Fatal fall and preliminary findings
Upon arriving at the scene, police officers found Giorgos Constantinou in the basement of the construction site, deceased from apparent injuries sustained in the fall. Preliminary investigations suggest that Constantinou was working on one of the upper floors of the building when, under unknown circumstances, he fell through a gap in the flooring intended for an elevator shaft, leading to his fatal injuries.
The Limassol Crime Investigation Department (CID) and the Yermasoyia Police Station are collaborating on the investigation, alongside Labour Inspection officials who assessed the site. A prohibition notice has been issued, halting all work at the construction site due to unsafe conditions.
Autopsy results and further examination
An autopsy conducted on Giorgos Constantinou confirmed that the cause of death was severe cranio-cerebral trauma along with multiple body injuries, consistent with the fall. Authorities are still awaiting laboratory test results to complete the forensic analysis.
Meanwhile, questions have been raised about the integrity of evidence at the construction site. Labour Inspection officials returned to the location to gather additional information, amid concerns that the scene may have been tampered with after the incident. The director of the Labour Inspection Department, Stefanos Achilleidis, stated that no conclusions have been made regarding potential interference, but further investigations are ongoing.
The Limassol CID continues its examination of the incident to determine the exact circumstances leading to the fatal accident, and whether negligence or violations of safety regulations played a role.
